If my following story could get even one of you to do something out of the ordinary once, I think the world might get a little better…
Today hen walking home I saw a gentleman walking down my street very slowly and cautiously.
I continued walking but then thought, screw this…
I ran after him and asked where he was going. He told me he was going to Coles.
A good 1.5 mile walk away. I asked if I could drive him.
The biggest smile crept across this 89 year old man’s face as he accepted.
Enroute I discovered he is 80% blind and has lived alone on Punt Road for the last 20 odd years since his wife pass.
2 years ago he was hit by a car and the person drove off and he now has a bung hip.
We did his shopping, explored a few shops he hasn’t been due to being out of his ‘known’ walking paths.
On the way home he told me the saddest thing…. No one has approached him just out friendliness in as long as he can remember.
Why must elderly people be so shunned and lonely? The next time you see an old lady or man struggling, offer some help, smile at them, do anything for pete’s sake.
You don’t know how freaking lonely their lives are or what they are experiencing.
Joe and I are buddies now and I’m looking forward to our weekly shops together!
